Product details
Some of the most coveted hardware in recording history now lives inside a single plugin. RoundTrip by Tokyo Speirs is a full analog roundtrip — preamp, console channel, tone box, summing bus, and tape machine — modelled component by component and presented as one commit-style processor you print to your tracks before mixing begins.
The concept comes straight from classic studio practice. On the great records, the sound was shaped at the source: microphones ran through legendary preamps, into iconic consoles, and the mix was summed through celebrated desks and printed to tape. Every stage added subtle, musical coloration — transients tamed, harmonics adding thrust, low fundamentals gaining octaves, and the whole mix gluing together before processing even started. RoundTrip recreates that entire journey digitally, without the maintenance, cost, or studio time the hardware demands.
The modelling covers the gear engineers actually reach for. The mic preamp section offers the Funky V76, inspired by 60s European tube amplification, alongside the unmistakable British N73 pre that has defined countless records. The console channel gives you two time-tested channel strips: a punchy American mid-forward console and the snap and clarity of a Solid 4E-style inline desk. For summing, choose between a British broadcast 6B tube console, the revered Brit 8048, or era-defining 4000-series VCA summing — three genre-defining consoles spanning multiple decades of recording technology.
Between console and summing sits Shine, a dedicated parallel harmonic stage tuned specifically for high-end excitement and low-end bloom. It reacts dynamically to your source material, adding the air and polish you were going to reach for later anyway. The tape stage offers the ubiquitous Amped 102 multitrack on GP9 tape or the Sturdy A800 on 456 formula, both running the custom-calibrated settings Tokyo settled on after years of tweaking. The Climiter module closes the chain: a transparent limiter at its lowest settings, morphing into an extreme signal clipper and flattener at the top.
What sets RoundTrip apart from other analog emulations is v1.1’s Gear Swap and Drift. Real hardware units differ from each other — resistors, capacitors, and tubes all sit a few percent off their rated specs. Gear Swap recreates this by rolling a unique set of component values per instance, while Drift introduces a slow, bounded wander around the target spec, mimicking how gear warms up and power supplies breathe. Your twenty instances of RoundTrip genuinely behave like twenty different hardware units, eliminating the sterile buildup of identical digital processing.
Use it at the front of your workflow as the first plugin printed to your takes, or on the mix bus for the final pass: hit the summing console and print the mixdown back to tape. AAX, AU, and VST3 versions are included for Mac and Windows, 64-bit only.
