Most mastering plugins are designed by software teams guessing at what engineers need. REISEI is the opposite: it was designed by a working mastering engineer in Japan, for his own sessions, and released as ONRI Audio’s debut plugin. What It Is

REISEI is a one-screen mastering processor in AU and VST3 formats: compressor, saturator, EQ, DE-DYN dynamic EQ, WIDE stereo imaging and master limiter, arranged around a single spectrum analyzer. The compressor, saturator, EQ and dynamic EQ can be placed in any order, so gain staging and tone shaping follow the material rather than a fixed topology. It is a deliberate, opinionated tool — the sound of an engineer who knows exactly which moves matter at the final stage.

Direct Manipulation Mastering

The defining design decision: the analyzer is the control surface. Every band, node and grip is manipulated directly on the spectrum — you act on the curve itself rather than translating what you see into separate parameter values. This collapses the feedback loop between diagnosis and treatment to a single gesture. In a discipline where decisions are measured in fractions of a decibel, removing that translation step is not a convenience; it is an accuracy upgrade. The interface stays out of the way because there is almost no interface beyond the signal.

PARTIAL EQ and Additive Resynthesis

PARTIAL EQ deserves technical attention. Built on additive resynthesis, it isolates a specific harmonic in the signal and tracks it as pitch moves, then allows lift, cut, or anti-phase cancellation. Because the processing is strictly linear, it introduces no distortion of its own — the correction is mathematically clean. For mastering engineers, this solves a class of problems that broadband tools handle badly: resonances that track the performance, vocal harshness that migrates with melody, low-mid buildups that shift with key changes. It is harmonic surgery with a tool built for exactly that.

Metrology, Not Guesswork

REISEI’s metering follows ITU-R BS.1770-4 — integrated, short-term and momentary loudness, LRA, true peak and PLR — with streaming loudness targets and an APPLY TARGET utility for platform compliance. The UNITY control auto-compensates output against input level, enforcing matched-loudness comparisons on every bypass test. The saturator section provides 15 models in five groups with EV/OD even-odd harmonic weighting and a THD readout with peak hold, giving quantifiable control over harmonic coloration.
