Sound Particles approaches audio from first principles: sound is physical, it exists in space, and it should move. Brightness Panner is their answer to panning — instead of placing sounds at fixed positions, it analyzes the audio in real time and moves it dynamically based on what the sound is doing. Brightness, pitch, or MIDI notes become the conductors of spatial motion.

The analysis engine offers three distinct inputs. Brightness analysis computes the spectral centroid — the perceptual center of the sound’s frequency content — and maps it to position. This is extraordinarily musical: a filter sweep naturally travels through space, a bright transient jumps forward while a dark tail recedes. Pitch analysis runs a monophonic pitch detector, so melodic lines trace spatial melodies — each note of a solo occupying its own place in the field. MIDI analysis routes note data directly to position, turning your controller into a spatial instrument.

The two panning modes interpret the analysis differently. Pan mode is a particle-based end-to-end pan: you define a start point and an end point, and the analysis value drives the sound between them — brighter or higher-pitched moments push further toward the destination. Sliding mode produces continuous gliding motion along custom paths, better suited to evolving textures and immersive beds that should never sit still.

Movement customization is deep: define trajectories from speaker positions to the center, clockwise or counter-clockwise motion from custom start points, and fine-tune the dynamics of the motion itself with threshold, ratio, attack, and release — the familiar language of dynamics processing, repurposed for space. The sidechain input deserves attention from advanced users: feed any external signal into the analysis and let one track’s brightness or pitch steer another track’s position. A hi-hat pattern panning a pad, a vocal steering a reverb — the creative combinations are endless.

The visualization dome is both a monitoring tool and a design surface: every movement is drawn in real time, so you always know exactly what the plugin is doing to your sound field. For immersive engineers, this visual feedback is essential when placing motion in Atmos or Ambisonics beds.

Output formats span the full range: stereo, surround 5.1 and 7.1, Ambisonics up to 3rd order, binaural, and Dolby Atmos 7.1.2.
