Under the hood, Density combines three of Sound Particles’ core technologies: particle systems, granular synthesis, and 3D rendering. Your input is divided into grains on a microsound timescale (1–100ms), and each grain gets its own pitch, timing, amplitude, and spatial trajectory. Because the grains are genuinely resynthesized rather than copied, the generated voices have the organic imperfection of real ensemble playing — the quality that makes a choir sound like thirty people instead of one person with an effect on.

The three operation modes scale with your ambition. Basic Mode is deliberately simple: small or large ensemble, a detune knob, and an add-bass option that drops in a voice an octave below. It’s the mode you reach for when the mix needs width now. Detune Mode is the sound designer’s playground — control voices number, voice speed, grain size, grain type, dynamic range, and position divergence, then choreograph the grains’ movement direction in the Top View. Multipitch Mode adds harmonic intelligence: up to eight voice groups, each with its own pitch, voice count, and gain (plus mute and solo), with 25 voices per slot for a theoretical 200 voices of density.

The Top View deserves special mention. This circular visualization shows every grain bouncing around virtual 3D space in real time — not just eye candy, but a genuine mixing tool for immersive work. When you’re placing 200 voices in a Dolby Atmos bed, seeing the movement is as important as hearing it. Combined with the XY Pad’s two-parameter performance control, Density becomes an instrument you play rather than a processor you set.

Format support is comprehensive: mono, stereo, 5.1, 7.1, Ambisonics up to 6th order, binaural, and Dolby Atmos 7.1.2. The plugin is equally at home thickening a vocal in a stereo pop mix and building evolving particle clouds in an immersive film score. Separate input/generated-voice gain controls make automation musical and intuitive.

Density runs as AAX Native, AUv2, AUv3, and VST3, on macOS 13.3 or higher (Intel and Apple Silicon) and Windows 11 or higher. Requirements are modest: 2-core CPU, 4GB RAM, 200MB disk space.
